open prairie. It was used as feed by deer,
huge flocks of prairie chickens, and wolves.
The buffalo had long before migrated west
of the Missouri River."

WINFIELD SCOTT
The township Scott, and the new town Winfield, were
both named after this Mexican War hero.
BARTHOLOMEW HOCHREITER
The first settler in 1836.
GEORGE HOOVER
Kept the first store in "the place" and was probably first postmaster in 1854.
Hn WASH MULLIN
Founder and President of Eastern Iowa District Fair of Winfield that was started in 1882, and continued until the 1930s.
FAITH FELGAR
Pen name used by Mrs. George (Lucretia A.) Kepper, Household Editor and writer of a daily syndicated column appearing in several mid-western states at the turn of the 20th century.
SENATOR WILLIAM CARDEN
Served several terms in the Iowa House of Representatives and two terms as Senator for Iowa in the late 20s, early 30s.
Among the purposes of The Winfield Historical Society shall be:
To kindle and keep alive active interest in state and local history.
To promote interest in local history by historical markers, programs, observations, and pageants of early pioneer history.
To secure, preserve and publish the recollections and reminiscences of those who have taken part in or witnessed the growth of local communities.
To collect and preserve materials of local history.
To promote the presentation and display of historical relics.

Get to know the soul of Winfield. Explore how it was founded in the mid 1800s. Learn how a bustling railroad and agricultural center of yesterday evolved into the busy bedroom community it is today. Visit the Winfield Historical Society Museum which is "on-growing" in the Masonic Temple, located at 114 S Locust Street. Exhibits include an old school room, Senator Carden artifacts, 1930s kitchen, Beacon Press, fire hose cart, etc.WE WELCOME YOU!
